Today’s generation, especially young people have no respect for flags and they seem to have forgotten what the flags symbolize. Country flags are a symbol of national pride and honor to our country. We raise our flags to honor all the men and women who fought, so that we can be independent and live freely. This tradition is however fading, not only having people forgotten to pay tribute to the country flags, but also teaching them how to take care of the flags.
Americans get upset when they see their country flags being burnt and trashed by other countries and their anger is justifiable. It’s important to remember that it’s your moral obligation to honor and respect not just your country’s flag, but every other flag. The flags are of great importance in their countries of origin and you shouldn’t undermine or downplay their importance. The same way you wouldn’t like it if another country mishandled your flag. The following are flag etiquettes that display your patriotism and honor for your flag.
1. All are equal.
It’s customary for us to fly our individual state flags lower than old glory; however, the same should not be done for other country flags. To put another banner lower than the national flag is undermining other countries and it implies that the US is superior to other countries. This will not be taken kindly by delegates and representatives from other countries. All flags ought to fly at equal height, if the flags are raised in the US; the American flag is flown on the right side of the other flags.
2. Flags should not touchdown.
It’s disrespectful to let another country’s flag or even your own to drag or touchdown. In case the flag is large, you can have more people carry it, so that it is positioned properly.
3. Flags should be well maintained.
It’s bad etiquette to fly a torn or worn out flag. When the flag wears out it should be replaced and a burning ceremony ought to be done to dispose the old flag. You must never fly a country’s flag upside down; when raising the flag, ensure that you know which side ought to go up. All country flags ought to be handled with care and given respect, which is rightly due. Country flags are a symbol of national unity and must be accorded with very high respect.
